A family in Howard County, Maryland, called on Davida Rodriguez of Davida’s Kitchen & Tiles to update the kitchen in their 1990s-era abode. They wanted a more functional layout and a contemporary sensibility to complement the modern aesthetic in the rest of the home.

It wasn’t so much the all-white cabinets or the awkwardly shaped island that spurred kitchen designer Davida Rodriguez to action-after more than 20 years in her house, she could no longer take cooking in the dark. “I missed out on all the afternoon sun,” Rodriguez says, noting a wall of cabinets that cut off the kitchen from large windows in the west-facing dining room.

During the conversion of a pre-war row house to three condos in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Northwest DC, Davida Rodriguez was brought in to design kitchens that would mirror the fresh, modern aesthetic the developer sought. “I wanted to make the kitchens feel extravagant on a budget,” she says.

The new floor plan called for the wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the main floor to be removed and a pantry to be replaced by a mudroom addition. Based on these plans, Rodriguez selected dark cabinetry and white countertops, then white-washed the exposed brick wall for contrast with the sleek cabinetry and hardwood flooring. Open shelving displays the client’s collection of artifacts, and custom-height pantry cupboards topped by floating cabinets provide storage.

“You can increase square footage and functionality by incorporating smaller spaces around the kitchen such as a closet, butler pantry or bathroom,” says Gaithersburg kitchen designer Davida Rodriguez. “Taking down walls between a breakfast room and kitchen gives that great room effect without having to bust out.”
